Hotel Vendome Fire occurs.

June 17, 1972

Nine members of the Boston Fire Departments (Lts. Thomas Carroll and John Hanbury and Firefighters Thomas Beckwith, Joseph Boucher Jr., Charles Dolan, John Jameson, Richard Magee, Paul Murphy, and Joseph Saniuk) are killed when the floors of the building, which is being renovated into apartments, collapse without warning. A funeral for the firefighters is held at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on June 22, 1972, and a memorial is dedicated on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in 1997.*
